With our annual group package to Prince Rupert in the spring sold out we have added a special package to enjoy the fall colours of Canada roundtrip from Toronto, Ontario to Northern British Columbia and the shores of Pacific Ocean. This will be the first time the fall colours can be enjoyed in one of VIA Rail’s full Panorama Dome cars between Jasper, AB and Prince Rupert, BC, and only available to Rail Travel Tours guests.
The only tour package available (that we know of) roundtrip from Toronto featuring BOTH the scenic rail journey aboard VIA Rail' s CANADIAN and (possibly the most scenic mountain rail journey in Canada) the JASPER, AB – PRINCE RUPERT, BC train. The journey will take you across the Canadian Shield and Prairies and then through the Canadian Rocky and Coastal Mountains, in daylight, to Northern BC and shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. Overnight in hotels and enjoy Jasper, AB, Prince Rupert, BC and Prince George, BC as part of this unique tour. Enjoy planned off-train excursions such as the Maligne Lake boat tour in Jasper National Park, Icefields Parkway and Columbia Glacier tour, Museum of Northern BC, the North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site and other heritage attractions. Travel past the site of the last spike on the Grand Trunk Pacific, and learn about this railway from the past (now part of CN) and it’s President, Charles Melville Hayes, who envisioned this route. The tour price also includes all admissions at attractions and off-train tours, train travel in Sleeping Car class, hotels, all meals on the trains and more, for an unbelievable Canadian rail journey.
What the tour includes:
DAY 1 – All Aboard the train to start our journey West.
Starting from Toronto’s downtown Union Station, for the scheduled morning departure, guests will board VIA’s westbound train The CANADIAN in Touring (Sleeping car) class. Once onboard enjoy a Bon Voyage reception and also enjoy lunch and dinner on the train. The route of the train travels North then West in the province while passing many lakes and rivers, isolated communities and fishing camps. Move around the train as you like (subject to any Covid-19 restrictions) and take in the events and views from the train’s lounge, activity and dome cars and again overnight on the night on the train. Meals included today: Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 2 – Enjoy the scenery of NW Ontario and Manitoba from the train.
Awake to enjoy breakfast in the dining car and travel past the scenic Canadian Shield of NW Ontario and eastern Manitoba. This evening the train arrives, for an extended stop, at the journey’s mid-way point, the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Here you will have time to tour the historic Winnipeg Union Station. Departing Winnipeg, the train travels through western Manitoba and into the Province of Saskatchewan. See a grand prairie sunset from the dome car before retiring for the night while again overnighting on the train. Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 3 – Continuing west thought Saskatchewan and into Alberta.
This morning travel through the western part of the Province of Saskatchewan and into Alberta. Stretch your legs on the platform in the Provincial Capital of Edmonton - where a Panorama Dome Car will be added to our train traveling to Jasper. Breakfast, along with Lunch and Dinner will be enjoyed on the train and you will again overnight in your sleeping car space. Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 4 – Arriving in the Canadian Rockies and the town of Jasper.
Awake to the Canadian Rockies and scheduled arrival into Jasper to explore this picturesque mountain town and region. We plan to literally explore from the bottom to the top so we can experience the natural beauty of Jasper National Park. First, we will visit the scenic Maligne Canyon to marvel and its beauty from the trails and bridges over what is called the deepest canyon in the Canadian Rockies followed by some free time to enjoy the Maligne Lake Restaurant for Lunch or to just enjoy the view. This afternoon we will enjoy more mountain scenery on what has been called the “Best Boat Cruise in Canada” from our tour boat as it traverses the turquoise water of the Maligne Lake. After an exciting arrival day in the mountains, we will transfer back to downtown Jasper and check into our hotel. The remainder of the day, so we don’t oblige you to any one option will be free time for our guests to explore Jasper with its many options to dine for Dinner on their own Meals included today: Breakfast.
DAY 5 – More Alberta Mountain views and cross the border to British Columbia.
Sleep in or take some time to do some shopping here in Jasper before our mid-day boarding and departure of VIA RAIL’s Jasper - Prince George train for the first day of this (daylight only) trip viewing the Canadian Rockies of Alberta and British Columbia. Our assigned seats will be in the exclusive Panorama Dome car to enjoy the stunning views from the isolated route of this train as we travel toward the BC interior and eventually the Pacific coastline. The train also has a Park Car, or dome observation car, with a wraparound lounge area at the train's end and an upper dome area with 360 degree views and lounge areas in the lower part of the car for comfortable viewing of the countryside the train travels through. Our guide or onboard VIA staff will keep you informed of when to have your camera ready for that memorable photograph. There will be Lunch and Dinner on the train (served at your seat) for our guests and arriving in Prince George at the end of the day we will transfer and check into our hotel to overnight here. Meals included today: Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 6 – Stunning scenery from Prince George to Prince Rupert and the Pacific Coast.
Awake in Prince George this morning before our transfer to the train station here and board VIA RAIL’S Jasper – Prince Rupert train (again in the Panorama Dome) for Day 2 to enjoy a full day of travel. Outside the train’s windows, guests will first view the area’s ranch country, mountain glaciers, stunning canyons, Coastal Mountains and the amazing Skeena River route that the train travels alongside later in the day – watch for seals and otters in the river! This could possibly be the most scenic views in Canada from a passenger train. The vegetation gets lusher and the river will get wider and wider before we see the Pacific Ocean as we arrive in Prince Rupert BC on the Pacific Coast. We will then transfer to the hotel where we will overnight here in Prince Rupert. Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 7 – Making the most of a full day to visit Prince Rupert and area.
Today will be a full day experiencing this area of BC`S North West Coast and our time here will be spent enjoying local history; First Nation’s culture; the wildlife of Prince Rupert; and heritage of the area include a guided tour of the preserved National Historic Site - The North Pacific Salmon Cannery and Fishing Village in nearby Port Edward. In Prince Rupert we will visit the Museum of Northern BC to learn about the Haida people and history of the area. We will also enjoy the Prince Rupert Port Interpretive Centre followed by free time to explore the shops and restaurants (and choose one for Lunch on your own) in what is called the COWS BAY area of Prince Rupert. Our guests will also enjoy a special Dinner overlooking the Pacific Ocean and again overnight at our Prince Rupert Hotel. Note that the hotel has an outdoor hot tub overlooking the Pacific Ocean! Meals included today: Dinner.
DAY 8 -Another full travel day of stunning scenery by rail as we start travelling east.
This morning transfer to the Prince Rupert train station to board the train on VIA Rail’s Prince Rupert - Prince George train to experience the Eastward journey on this scenic daylight only train. Rail Travel Tours guests will enjoy breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on the train. Outside the train’s windows, the trip will begin by viewing the Pacific Ocean coastline followed by B.C’s Coastal Mountains and the amazing Skeena River. Photograph the Hudson Bay Mountain and Kathleen Glacier. After again enjoying the awesome scenery of Northern BC we will overnight at our Prince George hotel. Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 9 – More mountain views while returning by rail to Jasper.
Awake to again enjoy breakfast at the hotel before the short transfer to the Prince George station and board the train to enjoy another daylight only trip viewing the ranch country of Northern BC. We enjoy, later in the day, Lunch on the train, and the route will pass – Mount Robson - the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies before returning to Jasper, Alberta to again overnight here. Meals included today: Breakfast & Lunch.
DAY 10 – Daytrip on the Columbia Icefields Parkway.
Always a favorite with past guests our day in the Rockies will be enjoyed by travelling south by bus on the renowned Icefields Parkway. We will visit the Icefields Interpretive Centre before experiencing a planned tour of the Athabasca Glacier on the Pursuit Columbia Glacier Explorer tour on their unique Sno-Coach vehicle. After this we make our way back to town and stop at Sunwapta and Athabasca Falls before arriving back in Jasper after a memorable day. Overnight at our Jasper Hotel – but before you head to bed sit in the rooftop hot tub as the sun sets behind the Canadian Rockies. Breakfast and Dinner will be on your own to enjoy the many options for these in Jasper or Lunch at the restaurant at the Columbia Icefield Interpretive Centre. Meals included today: None.
DAY 11 – Return to the Canadian to again enjoy the Rockies from our eastbound train.
This morning we have no scheduled activity’s so you can sleep in or awake early to enjoy some last opportunities for some souvenir shopping along Connaught Avenue or enjoy the mountain air and scenery. later in the morning we will enjoy the Jasper heritage train station one last time before boarding the scheduled eastbound Canadian to again view the Rockies in daylight. Also onboard the train guests will enjoy both Lunch and later in the day Dinner prepared by the Rail VIA chefs and again overnight on the train. Meals included today: Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 12 – Great views of the scenery of Eastern Saskatchewan & Western Manitoba
Awake to view the province of Saskatchewan and possibly some time to stretch your legs during the station stop in Saskatoon. Later today enjoy great views of the Qu'Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan and also while you cross the boundary back into Manitoba. Stretch your legs to view Winnipeg’s restored Union Station or a quick walk around the nearby Forks National Historic Site. With the train’s evening departure and the long days this time of year you may get to enjoy sunset over the skyline of Winnipeg and Eastern Manitoba before heading to bed in your space on the train. While continuing east the train quietly crosses the boundary back into Ontario. Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 13 - More scenery enjoyed from the train through Northern Ontario
Today you will continue to travel east in the province of Ontario and enjoy breakfast, Lunch & Dinner on the train. Travel through the scenic region of Northern Ontario featuring many lakes and rivers with isolated communities and fishing camps. Enjoy the trains lounge, activity and dome cars and again enjoy the night on the train. Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 14 – Your rail odyssey ends back in Toronto.
Today will be your last day on the train, travelling thought the Muskoka by daylight to see the changes since your departure, and this afternoon you are scheduled to arrive back in downtown Toronto. This will be the end of the trip that past guests have told us - "This was the most scenic Canadian rail journey we ever took part in." and "…thrilled how well Rail Travel Tours took care of them." Meals included today: Breakfast & Lunch.
