SATURDAY APRIL 9, – SUNDAY APRIL 10, 2011
The Winnipeg Railway Museum & Rail Travel Tours are offering a weekend rail tour, in support of the museum, roundtrip from Winnipeg or Portage La Prairie. The tour will travel west on VIA Rail’s dome car train The Canadian past the picturesque region of Western Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan and the Qu’Appelle Valley. The trip also features an overnight in Melville, Saskatchewan and all meals. The following morning after touring Melville’s attractions the tour will return to Winnipeg by rail.
WHAT THE TOUR INCLUDES:
- DAY 1 - SATURDAY Morning meet and greet at Winnipeg's Union Station and tour of the Winnipeg Railway Museum before departing on VIA's westbound CANADIAN. A short time after departing Winnipeg stop and welcome aboard further guests from Portage la Prairie. Travel through Western Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan enjoying the views of the prairies fall harvest and the untouched scenery near Firdale that was once the shoreline of the glacial lake Agassiz. Get your camera ready for the 35 mile stretch where the tracks travel past the winding Assiniboine Valley, part of the Qu’Appelle Valley system, and the great views from the impressive Uno Trestle. Arrive in Melville to enjoy a welcome presentation and overnight here.
- DAY 2 - SUNDAY Again awake to enjoy a full prairie breakfast before visiting the grand Melville Town Hall and Opera House. Built in 1912 the building, with its impressive dome, features offices council chambers, Romanesque windows and a grand auditorium once the site of luxurious balls and is still used for cultural events. This visit will be followed by a tour of the City and visit the Melville Heritage Museum where the group will enjoy this large museum and lunch on site prepared by their volunteers. After saying goodbye to the friendly folks and hospitality of Melville we will return to the rails and board the eastbound CANADIAN to take us back to Manitoba and Portage La Prairie. Onboard the train you can again enjoy the views from the dome car and enjoy dinner on the train before returning to Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg.
